Trees Down on the Line

"I went over to Michigan to look at the RR (in mid-June).  I found Battle Creek had a big storm and there was a lot of tree parts down and the railroad would take some work to get it open.  I started going West from Phelps and got just past the West switch of Sumac and found a big tree and a dead pine across the tracks.  This was too big for me to handle alone so turned around and went East from Phelps and cleaned the ROW till I was near Hare Park.
A dead pine tree fell across the tracks so worked on it.  Cleared the track without needing the chainsaw. As I worked East from Hare Park, I ran into a downed dead pine and a maple that would take the chain saw to get thru.  After clearing that mess, it was clear of branches and trees all the way
to Clear Lake.  Just many twigs to flick of the tracks.

My second day on the railroad was good.  I had Bruce P. come out with me and we took the big chainsaw out to the tree across the tracks and worked it over till we got a gap to get trains thru.  When I cut the last chunk out of the tree, it sat back down into its crater so I didn’t need to cut anymore.  The tree bent the tracks so they will need to be replaced at some future date.  I spent the rest of the day blowing leaves of the ROW down to Clear Lake.

Bruce P. bought a 15 gallon weed sprayer and a battery to power it so the Sandy Ridge now has a weed spraying train.  We spent the day spraying
the ROW from Phelps down to Clear Lake."
