Sand Domes - August 2021

Guys,  I know that I keep telling you that this project is intense, but my crew about threw me out of the shop the other day and almost locked me out..... It all started with the sand domes. I feel that making and installing the sand domes on Big Boy is one of the most diffucult jobs to be done on the engine. So I decided to call a meeting on how to fabricate and install the domes. Everyone seem to be on board (that's train talk) with the plan, so the boys went back to the shop to work and I had some other activities to work on(taking a nap). When I got back to the shop, the boys had fabricated the domes and had them installed! Wow, this is great! I stood back and looked at the engine and then at the plan and then back at the engine....  Oh no, the domes were too high! Uh... how did they get them so wrong. When I let them know what I am seeing, they came unglued. I told the boys to cut off the top of the domes and lower them down to the correct height. You would have thought that I asked them to cut off their right hand or something like that. There was plenty of things said that I could not hear, but in the end, the domes are the correct height and all is good with the project.  Next up is more boiler details, so keep a lid on your dome, and the train on the track until next time. Thanks,  Barry  - chief slave driver at BLW. Building running rolling stock, one rivet at a time, since 1987.
