D&RGW  Dynamometer Car  -  March 2017

Work has started and castings are made.  Like most projects, Barry builds a "master" part
and makes a rubber mold from it.  Then he casts in Urethane, the duplicate parts needed.
Make 1, cast 2, or 4, or 6...  In this case, the side walls and even the car floor, and trucks too.

Two telegrams from the shop during March 2017...

The boys will be using the broad gauge rails, to build the Rio Grande / Krauss Maffei ML4000 and dynamometer car #10! Materials have been gathered in the shop and the trucks for the #10 have been constructed and rolled into the bay.  Like a tender for a steam locomotive, the dynamometer car will be constructed first. Masters for the sides, ends, roof and under frame are underway. The dynamometer car started life as a troop sleeper car. The D&RGW purchased a number of these cars and made most of them into MOW equipment. Most of them were painted all silver with black lettering. The number 10 got the Grande gold paint treatment to set it apart and match the engines.

The boys fabricated the masters for the dyno car and sent them to the forging and casting shop for the process. The casting shop got with the program and cranked out the parts. Once the castings were back in the erection shop, the boys  assembled the car sides, floor and got it up on the trucks with couplers. The boys are going to be working on the roof next.
