early August 2021 Track & Tie Work |
Wednesday, Aug 4th: Tom Weaver came down and we
took the Bruce Bus around the main line to clear it of wood. Nothing
major was down. We next attacked the tracks at the TT that were too
high. The first to get worked was the inbound track. We pulled the
ties and got a 3X4 piece of lumber and attached it to the face of the
retaining wall for that track. I added a steel bar across it so if
things changed, I could add or subtract steel to keep it level. I
coated the wood with a preservative to hopefully make it last. We put
back the ties and added a couple of new ones to finish up that track.
Next we went after the radial tracks and disassembled any rail joiners
and pulled lag screws so we could move the rail out or around. Adding
a piece to the front wasn’t going to work as it stuck out and hit the
TT face. I tried a piece of wood we had that was 1 inch and it was
good. Except it was too short! We than went to work on track 1. We
had to cut 2 of the bolts off with a cutoff wheel to get the joiners
off that track. By then it was quitting time and we cleaned up.
...these pictures are from Tom Weaver Thursday, Aug. 5th: The next morning I went to Menards to get some wood. I tried to get more of the same (5/4 deck boards) but was not successful as it turned out. The 5/4 wood isn’t an inch like it is suppose to be! I went back to track one and got a 3X4 that would fit and coated it. Marty Knox came over to work on #24 and I spent a lot of time helping him move #24 back and forth so he could set the valve gear. He was able to set the eccentric crank and find the length for the eccentric rod if I have the terms correct. When he was done it was cleanup time so I put away the tools and locked up. Friday, Aug. 6th: I got some pics of the wooded pieces Brayden and I placed a month back to hold the dirt on the fill on the North end of the trestle. I took a shot of the ties hanging in air to show how the dirt washes down. Saturday, Aug 7th: Brayden came over and we finished up Track 1 and started on the two radial tracks. I got some more 3x4’s and had Brayden coat them with preservative. Sunday, Aug 9th: Brayden and Doug Fox came and we finished up the coal dock radial and then the ash pit radial before lunch. After lunch we put a train together and put in some ties on the East side of the trestle. We got about 10 in when Brayden got a call that a person was here to see the RR. She is a docent at the Vicksburg RR depot and wanted to see what Brayden was always talking about when he was there. We gave her the royal tour. It was cleanup time when she left so we put everything away. - - Tom Click any picture to expand, then scroll thru the rest. Note: |
