March 24th-27th, 2021 Blowing Leaves & General Repairs plus an Excursion |
Wednesday Mar. 24: found me blowing leaves. I got
Phelps to the trestle done where the blower ran out of gas and I did
too
(no pictures). Adam Wright came by and took a look at my old original pump for #7. It needed some parts added and he procured the necessary stock and taps to make them. See (first picture) for what he did. The middle one is the original. Thursday Mar. 25: I created a work extra to go to the trestle and start blowing again. Here is some pics of the setup (first row). I finished to Clear Lake and started from Phelps and worked up to about MP 0.8 and pooped out. After that, I worked at the tie plant to get ready for a new dip treatment that I hope will slowdown water penetration and preserve them a little longer. Friday Mar. 26: Brayden came over and we blew leaves down the hill from High Pt to where I left off. Marty Knox came over to work on #24. He had the cleaned and polished valve gear parts to put back on. While he did this, I cleaned the flues in #10 and Brayden cleaned the Ashpan. When we were done we helped Marty move #24 back and forth so he could see the valve gear move. It has a problem he will need to look into (no pictures). Next, we ran to Jacks Pit and cleaned out the coal dock so it can be repaired or scrapped. On the way back up, we ran into Brayden’s Mom and Fiancé hoofing it down to see us at the Pit. We stopped and put them onboard for the ride back to Phelps. After servicing the engine, we gave them a ride to Clear Lake along with a nice young lady who is a friend of Adams (Sara). When we were at Jacks Pit, we put the coal into a blue barrel and put it on the train. It got moved to Clear Lake. Now there is an emergency supply there. When we got back to Phelps, we had a group waiting for us. Adam made it along with Bruce Phillips and a neighbor named Bill S. who lives up the road some in a summer cabin. We gave Sara, Adam and Bill a ride up the hill. #559 doesn’t like the curve near MP 0.4 as it uncouples around there on the trip up the hill. It is different feeling to see the train move on and you slow to a stop! It is a good thing we put a hand brake in the caboose! Anyhow, #10 took the coach, two cars and the caboose up easily to High Point. I got 4 pics from up there (bottom row + 1 cropped). Videos: also on Saturday, Bruce Phillips took some video of activities. Below are links to four video clips he created. - Tom |
